Jaco, Costa Rica Vacations are Fun and Safe
If you want a tropical vacation, Costa Rica is one of the safest spots. A recent, major study showed Costa Rica to be the safest country in Latin America (based on information gathered from the U.N. database on drugs and crime).
While Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras have been struggling with violence and further socioeconomic development, Costa Rica has taken large strides in positive directions! According to the United Kingdom’s, Oxford University, Costa Rica is first in both Latin America and Caribbean countries in the area of Social Progress.
What Can I Do in the Jaco Area
Besides what we already mentioned above, Jaco has several wonderful restaurants, various beach side bars and a more than a few legitimate nightclubs (discos). There is no shortage of delicious, yet affordable Costa Rican cuisine in Jaco Beach. You can get a heaping plate of food (casado) and a drink for between $4 and $5 dollars!
Have you always wanted to try your hand at surfing? Well, there are plenty of surf shops for surfboard rentals, averaging $10. There are also Surf School tents up and down the beach, many of the instructors are competitive surfers who give world class lessons. Most of the town locals speak a passable amount of English, so it is not the be-all-end-all if your Spanish is horrible!
Did we mention
Canyoning, zip-lines, waterfall hikes, 4×4 and ATV tours, crocodile boat tours in the mangroves, horseback riding and so much more?! There are so many awesome Jaco Adventure Tours to do each day!
YES, You Can Drink the Water!
Most of Costa Rica is developing and not really 3rd world. Jaco is not too far off of most people’s 1st world standards. WiFi is readily available and most people have cable & satellite TV. Almost all newer construction is built to California code and earthquake standards. And yes, you can drink the water! Though I wouldn’t recommend it in really rural areas, in Jaco and surrounding areas, the water is treated and perfectly drinkable. If you want to be extra cautious, any of the many pharmacies sell anti-parasite/bacteria pills for just a few dollars that will kill anything foreign in your system.
God forbid, but if someone gets ill or injured, Jaco has a good clinic that is part of Costa Rica’s socialized health care and in Herradura, just 5 minutes from Jaco, there is an excellent private hospital/clinic that rivals any U.S. or Canadian facility. CIMA, a full private hospital campus (one of the best in Latin America) is just 1 hour away in Escazu.
The town is small but wonderfully developed to serve as the county (canton) of Garabito’s capital. The entire county only holds around 17,000 people, of which around 10,000 live in the greater Jaco area.
So, as you can see, there are plenty of reasons why Jaco, Costa Rica should be on your list for a vacation pronto! Check out some of our affordable rooms at Jaco Beach Vacation Rentals.
